Monthly Salary (Basic + DA)
No. of Years Of Service
Gratuity is a monetary token of appreciation that an employer gives to an employee for their service and loyalty to the organization. The payment is paid in a lump sum when the employee leaves work, retires, or, in some situations, becomes disabled and is unable to continue their service. To qualify, permanent employees should have worked for 5 continuous years under the employment agreement with the company. Whereas, for fixed-term employees, it has been reduced to 1 year of continuous service under the new social security codes. There are situations where gratuity can be given before the five-year mark. For example, when an employee falls ill or is injured in an accident.
The Payment of Gratuity Act of 1972 governs the gratuity calculator in India. The sum awarded is based on the previous drawn salary of the employee and their years of service. This advantage is a financial cushion that provides long-term workers with a much-needed reward for their hard work and loyalty.
Now that you know what gratuity meaning is, let’s understand how to calculate your gratuity so that you can get a fair estimate of the amount expected.
The result can be slightly different depending on the category your employers and company fall into:
1. For Employers Covered Under the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972
Gratuity = (n × b × 15) / 26
The number 26 represents the average number of working days in a calendar month when Sundays are excluded, and 15 represents 15 days of wages earned per year of service. If service in the final year exceeds 6 months, it is rounded up to the next full year.
Mr. X worked for 8 years in a company covered under the Gratuity Act. His last drawn salary (basic + DA) was ₹1,50,000.
Gratuity = (8 × 1,50,000 × 15) / 26 = ₹6,92,308
2. For Employers Not Covered Under the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972
Gratuity = (n × b × 15) / 30
Employers not covered by the Act may use 30 calendar days, which gives a slightly lower payout compared to the covered formula.
Mr. Y worked for 10 years in a company that is not covered under the Gratuity Act. His last drawn salary (basic + DA) was ₹2,00,000.
Gratuity = (2,00,000 × 10 × 15) / 30 = ₹10,00,000
Employees working in establishments not covered under the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972, may receive gratuity as per their employer’s policy, employment contract, or company rules. A commonly used calculation is:
Here, the last drawn salary generally includes basic salary and dearness allowance. Since the eligibility criteria and gratuity amount may vary based on the employer’s terms, employees should review their company policy to understand how gratuity fits your retirement plan and overall financial preparedness.

Gratuity is not something every employee receives automatically. It comes with specific conditions tied to your length of service and the nature of your employment. Here is what you should know about gratuity eligibility:
Gratuity received by Central or State Government employees, as well as employees of local authorities, is fully exempt from income tax. For other employees, the tax exemption available under Schedule II(2) (previously known as Section 10(10)) is subject to prescribed conditions and limits.
For employees covered under the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972, the exempt amount is the lowest of:
For employees not covered under the Act, the exemption is the lowest of:
Any gratuity received above the eligible exemption is taxable as income. Therefore, it should be included while calculating your total taxable income as per the applicable income tax slabs in India. The ₹20 lakh exemption limit applies to employees covered under the Act from 29 March 2018 and to those not covered under the Act from 8 March 2019.
A gratuity calculator helps employees estimate the payout they may receive based on their salary and years of service. Knowing this amount in advance can help them plan their retirement corpus and make informed decisions about how to use the funds. For instance, employees may consider options such as a single premium pension plan to convert a lump-sum amount into a regular income stream during retirement.
